Baby Shira

Yes! Our baby girl is now officially Shira ("Shee-rah"), which means "song" in Hebrew.

I know I had said before that we already decided on a name, and in fact, we thought about a different name - but when we had her in our arms, somehow it didn't feel quite right. So we started considering other names, and after a week of holding everyone in suspense, we finally made the announcement.

Precious moments, hours and days are speeding by - all too quickly. I have noticed that Shira started gaining weight and developing adorable baby chubbiness. Some of her little newborn outfits already seem tight.

This new Mommy has developed the useful ability to fall asleep whenever and wherever at all possible - at any hour of the day or night; sitting, standing or lying down. I'm pretty sure all Moms out there had a similar phase with their newborns.

Other priorities (except, of course, nursing, changing, bathing and cuddling with baby) are very simple - meals, showers, clean clothes for Mommy and Daddy, washing the dishes and keeping up with laundry.

I'm lucky to receive lots and lots of help from my dear husband; also, we have a group of volunteers here who deliver meals for new mothers - something I appreciate very much. I know that within a few weeks, we'll probably fall into a routine which includes at least some cleaning and cooking, but for now, the home-made food that is delivered right to our home is such a blessing.

Shira ~ simple, lovely, well chosen as your daughter is a feathery song of our Creator God.

I remember the newborn days well. It seemed that one day blended to the next and at times I didn't know what day it actually was, nor cared, for holding that precious sweetie in my arms was more important than mere days. :o)

Walk softly through each moment, taking it all in, treasuring each aroma, texture and sound.

Love,
Jane

Hi Anna! Once again, Congratulations on the birth of your lovely baby girl. Thank you so much for sharing a picture of her for all of us to see. You've picked an absolutely beautiful name for your daughter! :) It rolls so easily off of the tongue too. When she is older and learning how to write her own name it will not be difficult since it does not have a lot letters as well.

My church has been bringing us meals for more than two weeks now. Today is the last day. Boo-hoo!

:-)

It is such a blessing to new moms to have help in those first few weeks!! Without it I'm sure we would be having pizza delivered or eating fast food some nights because I was so tired!

What a beautiful name for a beautiful girl. We had the same experience of having a name picked out, feeling unsettled about it, and keeping everyone in suspense for 10 days while we picked a new name!

Psalm 77:6 I will remember my song in the night; I will meditate with my heart, And my spirit ponders:

Her name is beautiful and I am certain you will not forget your Song in the night.

Beautiful name, I love it. Rooted in ancient texts and young and fresh all at the same time.

Of course, it also happens to be my name (although I use a pseudonym here, usually). I was one of the first to be called Shira, before it became fashionable. It's now considered a modern classic.

She's a lovely little baby.

"I'm pretty sure all Moms out there had a similar phase with their newborns."

Alas, I fear not. I have not been able to sleep in the daytime since I was under two years old, even when I am in an appalling state of exhaustion (as I often was at 2 years old by halfway through the afternoon - fortunately for my mother, I slept well at night!). Most people can, of course, but it's another of these instances where advice that assumes all women are alike doesn't help - the person who says 'helpfully' "You can just sleep when the baby sleeps" has never been awake for 30 hours, speech slurred with exhaustion, unable to eat for feeling sick, and still not able to sleep because it is not dark and silent.

What a fantastic name, Anna! Isn't a baby girl such a beautiful song in your heart?!?!?!

I was never able to fall asleep after Elspeth was born ~ I had hideous insomnia for nearly these three months and only recently began to sleep again. Perhaps it was because of our violent labor and birth? I wondered about that back when I'd lay in bed wide awake most of the night.

Elspeth has begun to sleep through the night which is a blessing indeed!!!! We've set up the crib (cot) in the nursery and now I'm looking at a natural organic cot mattress + bedding. We're phasing her over to organic baby formula ~ I'm so greatful that you were able to feed your baby naturally! It reall makes a difference! Elspeth has already been on antibiotics for a chest infection which goes to show you the difference between formula and breast milk.

Some days I just sit there and stare at Elspeth and try my best to burn her baby-image into my memory because she'll soon be growing up. They grow so fast!! Sometimes when I'm in that state between being awake and being asleep I have dreams of Elspeth as a little girl running across the lawn. It's so amazing!!

You'll have to send me a photo Anna!!

**HUGS** Gotta go before the computer begins its antivirus program which bogs everything down. GOD BLESS!!
